The Anti-Fragile Mindset vs. the Fragile Ego by Created Context
All right so I've been working on a few
0:03
videos that I want to make that address
0:06
some of the larger issues that I've
0:07
been thinking about and in the process I
0:09
came across this realization that I
0:11
thought was fun to share and this has to
0:13
do a lot with again process and products
0:16
right when I look at being a human being
0:19
or the human medium as I like to call it
0:21
these days what I see is that there's a
0:23
process going on right you're processing
0:25
incoming information and as a result
0:27
there's an output right you could say
0:29
that you learn things or you build your
0:34
ego you build your persona and I was
0:37
thinking about that and I was thinking
0:38
about antifragility which you know
0:40
antifragile is a book written by
0:41
Nassim Taleb which is a great book
0:43
and I would recommend everyone to read
0:45
it and the concept of anti fragile
0:47
really has to do with fragility versus
0:50
antifragility where fragility means
0:53
something that can only be made less
0:58
through chaos so something that is that
1:00
can only become less because there's
1:02
forces interacting with it where
1:05
antifragility is this idea where
1:07
something can only become stronger
1:09
unless its killed by the forces that
1:12
it's interacting with basically to
1:14
summarize you could say that what
1:16
doesn't kill me makes me stronger and
1:18
Taleb points out that there's a lot of
1:21
things ideas concepts animals everything
1:25
I think he's basically saying
1:26
everything living is antifragile and
1:30
when I was thinking about this idea of
1:31
the human medium and the fact that
1:35
there's a process and a product going on
1:37
right you could say that your mindset
1:39
and the way you look at life and the way
1:40
you understand yourself is a living idea
1:44
it's a it's a movement right you are
1:47
dealing with an interaction that’s non-stop
1:50
and the way you deal with it that's your
1:52
process that is an antifragile process
1:55
meaning you live and you learn if you
1:58
pay attention you become better at that
2:00
but the other side of that idea is that
2:03
if you don't deal with reality if you
2:07
don't commit to the process you start
2:10
committing to the product of that process
2:12
and that product is totally imaginary
2:14
it's you it's ego it's your idea of your
2:17
story or of who you are or of what's going on
2:19
and the interesting thing is that this
2:22
idea is mostly fragile especially if
2:27
it's a negative approach and I will go
2:29
into this in greater detail in
2:33
this video that I've been working on
2:34
which looks at the human experience the
2:38
human medium or my perspective on what
2:40
it means to be a human explained in
2:42
logical terms but what you could say is
2:45
that the ego is this fantasy of what you
2:50
are what you would want to be what you
2:52
wish to be and what you do is you
2:54
compare this idea with reality a lot and
2:58
you could say that that is the
3:00
point where cognitive dissonance is
3:02
created and this ego is a fragile thing
3:07
where your mindset or your process is
3:09
antifragile meaning you interact and
3:12
you learn as you go
3:14
so you you pay attention to the incoming
3:16
feedback and whenever you get signals
3:18
that tell you that something is not the
3:20
way it should be
3:21
you don't treat it as an attack on your
3:23
ego but you look at it like maybe I
3:25
should do something in the process to
3:27
take this feedback into account right
3:30
it's information for the next action and
3:32
not something that is wrong it's not
3:34
you're not judging it you're not
3:36
looking at it and comparing it with
3:37
something else and then having an
3:39
opinion about it right you're looking at
3:41
it somewhat in isolation and it's not
3:43
true of course because nothing is in
3:45
isolation but you're looking at it
3:47
and saying okay if this is what's going
3:49
on what does that mean for me
3:51
or what do I want to do with it instead
3:53
of receiving it in the ego side and
3:56
saying this is going on that's not right
3:58
or right I need to do something and what
4:02
you can say is that as you're building
4:06
ego it becomes larger and larger the
4:08
story becomes bigger and bigger and more
4:11
and more intricate and you need to
4:13
protect that story right if someone says
4:15
something to you or looks at you in a
4:17
certain way you could interpret it as an
4:19
attack on your story right the story is
4:22
everybody likes me so I'm walking around
4:24
thinking everybody likes me or everybody
4:26
should like me or I'm such a likable guy
4:28
and all of a sudden somebody looks at me
4:30
in a way that I think why is he looking
4:31
at me like that
4:32
he must not like me something is amiss
4:35
something is wrong right so the ego gets
4:38
attacked and the only way the ego can
4:40
protect itself is to be small to
4:43
be tight to be resisting right because
4:46
it's fragile ego doesn't necessarily
4:49
especially if you don't have this
4:51
realization about mindset and how things
4:53
work this ego becomes a structure where
4:55
your mindset in dealing with information
4:57
is a process you're now looking at
4:59
outcome if this and this happens what
5:01
does that mean below you know if I do
5:05
the calculation what is the answer
5:07
to the question and if I don't
5:09
like the answer then something needs to
5:10
happen and what I've realized is that
5:12
this ego is a fragile being because it
5:15
can only go one way it can only become
5:17
smaller it can only be attacked meaning
5:20
you can build it up you can blow
5:22
air into your story and make it into
5:24
something where you're the king of the
5:26
world
5:26
but then there's only
5:29
one way to go when you start taking in
5:31
the feedback and that's down because
5:33
you're deluding yourself into what's
5:35
going on plus you're not in control so
5:37
whatever the feedback is is what the
5:39
feedback is you don't control that even
5:41
if you're if you are the king of the
5:43
world right somebody might want to
5:44
challenge you
5:45
you don't influence what that person
5:47
thinks or how he looks at you right
5:49
haters gonna hate you don't influence
5:51
the fact that there are haters that are
5:53
gonna hate you only influence how you
5:55
deal with that incoming information and
5:58
so it's very interesting that right I'm
6:03
always thinking about process and
6:04
product and I would say that product is a
6:06
dead thing it's a dead structure right
6:08
knowledge money outcome results are all
6:11
dead things that you can't really
6:13
interact with what you can interact with
6:14
is the movement the thing
6:17
that's going on and you can
6:19
participate in that and what I realized
6:23
again is that this process is an
6:25
antifragile process it becomes stronger
6:27
through time especially if you have a
6:29
positive mindset where you believe that
6:31
what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
6:33
and you like interacting
6:35
with that process and you like getting
6:37
feedback and you like even some stress
6:38
or some right some edge of your comfort
6:41
zone stuff but if you're into the
6:43
maintaining of a static thing which is
6:45
impossible but we try nonetheless then
6:48
you start creating this fragile thing
6:50
and that creates cognitive dissonance all
6:53
the time but it also like it's an
6:56
exercise in futility right you will find
6:58
that it is unattainable this structure
7:01
to maintain this structure because
7:02
you're protecting this little fragile
7:05
thing that whatever's coming at it the
7:07
only way to make sure it doesn't get
7:09
damaged is to protect it completely
7:10
which is impossible so we have our
7:12
strategies of denial arguing pointing
7:17
fingers right all these things it's just
7:19
to say I need to protect this ego
7:22
and really there's only one way to go
7:24
and it's not completely true because you
7:26
could say that you can build up your ego
7:27
which would say you would make it bigger
7:29
and stronger but that's not true the
7:32
bigger an ego the less strong it really
7:35
is because there's more to be influenced
7:38
there's more to be touched right if I
7:40
just want to be a likable guy that's
7:42
something I can probably maintain for a
7:44
while especially if I'm being friendly
7:45
to people but if I want to be a likeable
7:47
guy I want to be extremely intelligent
7:49
and I want to be beautiful all right and
7:51
all these things that I have where
7:53
my ego is telling me that you know
7:54
there's nobody better in the world than
7:56
myself then I really you know should
7:59
stay in the house and lock the doors and
8:00
windows to make sure I can maintain that
8:02
idea because the moment I step outside I
8:04
go on the internet or whatever there's
8:05
gonna be interactions that's probably
8:07
that are probably gonna tell me that maybe
8:09
that idea isn't maintainable so I felt
8:13
that was an interesting concept to
8:14
realize that the process is antifragile
8:16
the product is fragile ego is something
8:19
that you know you can it's not a
8:23
workable strategy to “being happy” right
8:25
there's no such thing as “being
8:28
happy” there's this there's this chasing
8:30
of happiness I would say but the process
8:32
offers way more potential right the
8:35
human process the processing of incoming
8:37
feedback and having a good mindset a
8:39
good perspective on that offers way more
8:41
potential for growth and strength than
8:44
does this
8:45
idea of a residue of a structure of
8:48
a thing that is you can't protect your
8:51
idea of who you are but you can protect
8:53
your idea of what you are because if you
8:55
are honest and you get real then that's
8:58
just what you are and then it isn't
9:00
about protecting the idea it's about
9:01
becoming better at it so you could say
9:03
that antifragility
9:04
in a conceptual thing is learning right
9:08
all right I hope this is useful I will
9:11
look at the human experience like I said
9:14
in the next few videos I'm gonna
9:16
make a video about morals as well
9:18
because it's really interesting to look
9:20
at in this human experience and yeah I'll
9:23
talk to you later see ya
